Courseulles-sur-Mer & the D-Day beaches

Courseulles-sur-Mer is a key stop along Juno Beach — where the 3rd Canadian Division landed on 6 June 1944. The Juno Beach Centre, a ten-minute walk from our flats Courseulles Just Like Home and Le Patio, tells that story with a sober, moving museography.

The working fishing harbour is still alive: in the morning, you can watch the Coquilles Saint-Jacques (the local AOP scallops) and Courseulles oysters being unloaded. The open-air market on Tuesdays and Fridays is a delight. Sandy beach, sailing, sand yachting, mini-golf, riding school, cycling along the dykes: a full week without ever starting the car.

Bernières-sur-Mer & the quiet coast

A few kilometres east, Bernières-sur-Mer offers a quieter, more confidential coastline. La Voile de Nacre is just 50 metres from the beach, opposite the sailing club — perfect if you want to spend the week on the water or learn to sail.

Further afield: Arromanches, Omaha, Caen

Half an hour by car: Arromanches and its artificial harbour, Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc. The Caen Memorial is twenty minutes away — the best historical introduction to the whole region. Bayeux, its tapestry and cathedral are not much further.

The Pays de Retz, on the Atlantic side

La Maison du Bonheur, our fourth rental, sits in Bourgneuf-en-Retz, in the Pays de Retz (Loire-Atlantique, France). Fifteen minutes from Pornic and the Côte de Jade, twenty from Saint-Nazaire — another coast altogether: Atlantic beaches, marshes, quiet villages. The house is entirely on one level, perfect for families or guests with reduced mobility.

Getting there

Côte de Nacre: Caen is 20 minutes away (A13 / N814), Paris 2h30 by train. Pays de Retz: Nantes 45 min, Saint-Nazaire 20 min; TGV stations in Nantes or Saint-Nazaire.
